Silkscreening is a stencil of printmaking in which a design is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh, and ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface.

Screen printing first appeared in a recognizable form in China during the Song Dynasty. Screen printing was introduced to Western Europe from Asia in the late 18th century.

Credit is generally given to the artist Andy Warhol for popularizing screen printing as an artistic technique. Screen printing on garments currently accounts for over half of the screen printing activity in the United States.
